slipping away dark night ? / and after?
/ the tiger’s fierce mystery dawning
the bite of light / the teeth of morning /
I / flesh and blood / marrow and nerve /
skull-grin tied / sinew to bone /
shall I nuzzle cold darkness for feed ?
day comes // you — heartless departing // leave
me with obsidian thoughts /
feelings obstinate and tearful /
mother-dark / home of hidden / I will heft my heavy soft /
drag it to a place where others can see
sorrow / my sorrow / their sorrows
here — a sensible conclusion / a place to unpack /
display the claw and love of knowing
/ of knowing those twins — alive and hungry /
Are you there – other one?
/ hungry / now hunting /
more / hunting light ?
poem and image by Jo Mariner
Yet another really well constructed poem – really good and thought-provoking, Jo. The imagery is so, as always is so strong and so impressive, is your feel for language. The words in the poem have a wonderful ‘ring’ and the flow is satisfying. The above applies for instance, to ‘the tiger’s mystery dawning’. This, I really like. ‘and ‘bite of light’ is perfect in capturing that image of a momentary beam of light. The use of personification; teeth of morning’ so aptly conveys that sting/chill of early morning. I love the word ‘nuzzle’ conveys cosiness & the sense of safety which, to me, seems an interesting paradox in that stanza .
